Design of space for people with Parkinson's disease

prof. Ing. arch. Irena Šestáková, Ing. arch. Jan Tomandl, Ph.D.

The present publication summarises and organises the current knowledge on the impacts of architecture and the built environment on the mobility and orientation possibilities of persons with Parkinson’s disease. It supplements this existing knowledge with basic principles of spatial design so that requirements related to specific symptoms of Parkinson’s disease can be taken into account in a natural way. Emphasis is put on ensuring an independent and safe life while minimising the use of artificial compensatory elements. This publication is accompanied by videos demonstrating selected typical symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.
