The usage of information technologies is preconditioned by standardised environment of the relevant geographic information systems (GIS). Currently, the standardisation of this environment is focused on metadata. This is particulary important for spatial planning as it uses data from numerous external resources. The international domension of integrated cross-border planning emphasises the need for internationally compatible metadata information on GIS data elements.
