Theoretical Introduction to Perceiving and Interpreting Minimalist Architecture

Ing. arch. David Seidler

The beginning of minimalism is related to the book Phenomenology of Perception by French philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty. The book, published in 1945 and translated into English in 1962 by Colin Smith influenced artists in the 60s in the United States. They were preoccupied by human perception of their artworks. Minimalist architecture emerged in the 80s. How do we perceive architecture’s lack of signs? The aim of the paper is to introduce us to the discussion about the perception of minimalist architecture.
