The Department of Urban Design of the FA CTU provides teaching of subjects in bachelor, master and doctoral studies. It includes four design studios that work on architectural and urban planning topics at all scales of the built environment, from neighbourhoods and details of public space to large-scale planning concepts.

The new head of the department will build on the work of Professor Jan Jehlík, under whose leadership, for example, the City Development workshop was created, which connects students with experts in urban planning. Since 2015, the department has also been working on research projects in the field of commissioning master plans or the care of listed buildings in the context of urban planning. Every year, teachers of the Department of Urban Design participate in the Athens workshop, connecting 16 technical universities in Europe through intensive courses. The department also regularly organises (with a current break in the cycle) the Urbanism Inventory conference on current topics in urban planning, design and settlement construction.

"We focus on connecting scales and types of environments, understanding proportions from detail to the whole, and the importance of public space, including its topographical and morphological aspects," says Jan Jehlík, head of the Department of Urban Design.

Within the Department of Urban Design, the position of studio leader of the 2nd - 5th year for the Architecture and Urban Design programme is also being filled. Respecting the faculty's concept of "vertical" studios and the nature of the department, among other things, experience in architectural work at a wide range of scales is required.
