Every student has the right to a comfortable living! Speaking from my own experience, the dorm life is not usually considered very appealing in Czechia, which results in students preferring subletting to escape the discomfort they experience in student housing. The goal of my design was to find the balance between two sides of the student life. On one side fulfilling individual needs such as sufficient privacy, quiet environment, space for learning, comfort and cleanliness. On the other side, meeting expectations for a community life that is lively, dynamic and requires larger spaces for joint studying, meeting and various “hallway” events. In this design I work exclusively with one-bed and two-bet rooms, while each room has own bathroom. Paradoxically, although my goal is creation of a safe, comfortable and private space of apartments, the rooms intentionally don’t offer all that students would need and therefore forces the students to leave the room and meet with other peers, whether in common kitchens, study rooms or gym.
