Ny-Ålesund

Bc. Jan Dürrer

Annotation

Ny-Ålesund is the northernmost village in the world. The formerly frozen inhospitable mining town, due to its important location, became the place wherein 1926 Roald Amundsen and the airship Norge made an expedition to the North Pole. Ny-Ålesund has thus indelibly entered the history of aeronautics. Creating a new building in Ny-Ålesund, almost on the site of an unpreserved hangar, after almost a hundred years, is a challenge that combines several pitfalls. It can be said with certainty that the construction of this type of building is an independent but very interesting architectural and engineering discipline. In my design, I try to find a solution that primarily solves the pitfalls of transport, construction process and foundation of the building.
