Ny-Ålesund Airship Hangar

David Budil

Annotation

The location of the project is a small Nordic town Ny-Ålesund. The town which currently hosts numerous research stations was founded as a mining town and served as the starting point for attempts to reach the North Pole by air. The task was to design an airship hangar which would stand on the same site as the historical hangar which was used by Roald Amundsen and Umberto Nobile during their expeditions. The structure has a shape of two-thirds circle standing on the steel grid based on a naval structural keel. The circular structure consists of translucent laminate pyramids with aluminium U profiles and diagonal stainless steel rods. The advantages include translucency of the material, easy prefabrication and fast assembly, which is crucial in the arctic conditions.
