Maria Charouskova's house

Adéla Frnochová

Annotation

On August 26, 1968, a young CTU student, Marie Charousková, was shot for no reason by an unknown Soviet soldier in Klárov, Prague. This event and the atmosphere of the totalitarian regime are abstractly expressed by a simple mass shrouded in fog (translucent facade). In the fog, we can see two tall blocks that symbolize Maria and a Soviet soldier. When entering the dark, cramped cubicles, we can see through a small slit to the place of the event, whether our gaze meets the participant in the opposite cubicle. The clash of views creates tension, which is supported by audiovisual sensations and takes us back in time to 1968. The rest of the building is dedicated to students and houses a cafe, a study room and a lecture hall.
