GATEWAY DOWN TO THE MINE

Adam Kurka

Annotation

The design is based on the second phase of our vision, when the opencast lignite quarry is still closed to the public and natural recovery processes and terrain stabilization are underway. Due to the end of coal mining, large industrial sites are also gradually losing their original functions and need to be transformed for new functions or to upgrade their existing technologies. The design aims to improve the permeability of the landscape for humans and fauna, to slow down water runoff from the landscape and its purification, and to increase species diversity. Furthermore, it is also a reminder of the local historical footprint, reuse of industrial sites and infrastructure and preparation for Phase III of the quarry's revitalisation and opening.
