The intention of this project was to adapt the existing building of the Uran department store for the current requirements of the inhabitants of Česká Lípa.
The design of the building was created in the 1970s and was related to the surrounding buildings of the time. However, during the construction of the building, the surrounding houses were demolished and after the completion of Uran it became a solitaire with no surrounding context.
The very mass of the department store looks like an impregnable fortress. This expression is enhanced by the minimum of window openings on the façade.
The aim was to break up the monolith of the façade with niches and entrance spaces but at the same time to preserve the original expression of the building.
