KARLÍN BARRACKS

The five-storey building in the classicist style with a large courtyard served to accommodate thousands of soldiers. After 1989, it lost its original purpose and underwent a number of changes and uses. It is now closed due to its poor technical condition and the absence of necessary permits. The design breaks through the facades and extends new pedestrian streets through the building directly into the courtyard. The new streets are not defined by the strict regular lines, symmetry and monumentality of the Barracks. They introduce randomness, asymmetry and, above all, human scale into the massive buildings.
