House for Pénelope

Filip Ježdík

Annotation

The idea of the house is hidden in the waiting sorrow of Penelope, who has been waiting for her husband Odysseus for 10 years before he returns from the Trojan Wars. The house is situated on top of a cliff on the island of Ithaca. The form is made up of two geometric shapes on top of each other, with the first floor having a rectangular plan and the second part being elevated and shaped like a trapezoid. The side of the second floor facing the sea forms the longer side of the trapezoid so that Penelope has a great view and can see Odysseus' ship from afar if it is returning to port. The long staircase leading to the second floor symbolizes the length of her wait and the depth of her grief.
