Rock chapel with baptismal font

Jakub Jirčík

Annotation

“I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” The project, situated in the Scottish landscape, draws inspiration from prehistoric monoliths. Carved into the rocky substrate, it features a concrete staircase, bridges, benches, and an altar. The excavated space, organized with massive stone columns, is capped by an irregularly processed heavy stone slab, creating a contrast to the precise elements. This contradiction is emphasized by light penetrating through the gap between the slab and the opening. The source of water for religious purposes is an underground spring flowing through the structure, with a cylindrical baptismal font and a circular skylight. Dedicated to St. Barbara, the chapel honors the patron saint of children, miners, and architects.
