Pavla Melková appointed professor

On Tuesday, 12 December, President Petr Pavel handed over appointment decrees to 73 new university professors. Pavla Melková was appointed for the FA CTU.

The President and the Minister of Education, Youth and Sports Mikuláš Bek handed over the decrees in the Grand Auditorium of the Karolinum in Prague. "Do not forget the third role of universities, do not forget to share your knowledge with the general public. The closer the results of excellent science get to the people, the more they will become aware of its importance and social contribution," said Petr Pavel in his speech, who inaugurated a total of five new professors of the Czech Technical University in Prague.

Pavla Melková graduated from the Faculty of Architecture of the CTU and holds a diploma in monument preservation. She completed her doctoral studies in urbanism and spatial planning and defended her doctoral dissertation on the Humanistic Role of Architecture in Contemporary Society. She also habilitated at the FA CTU in the field of architecture with a thesis on Conceptual Approach in the Creation of Public Space. She completed a Fulbright Scholarship at GSAPP Columbia University New York under the supervision of Kenneth Frampton. She has been nominated for the Architect of the Year Award 2014, and has been awarded prizes such as the Grand Prix of Architecture 2012, the Mayor's Award of the Capital City of Prague, and the Mayor's Award of the City of Prague. Prague 2012, nomination for the Club for Old Prague Award 2012, first prize of the East Centric Arhitext Awards competition 2013 and nomination for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award 2013.

She is a partner in the MCA studio, which she founded together with architect Miroslav Cikán. She is also involved in artistic creation, theoretical, lecturing and publishing activities and organizing exhibitions. She is the author of a number of books, such as Bastion XXXI at the Battle of God, Experiencing Architecture, A Table by the Window, A Book on the Table, The Humanistic Role of Architecture, Space for Man in the Work of Michal Škoda, The Edges of the Day, Manual for the Creation of Public Spaces in the Capital City of Prague, and The City of Prague. Prague, or Strategy for the Creation of Public Spaces in the Capital City of Prague. 

In 2012, she founded the Office of Public Space at the Prague City Planning and Development Institute (IPR), which she also led until 2017. Currently, she is a member of the IPR Director's College, Vice-Chair of the IPR Gremial Council and Head of the IPR Professional Education Programme. In 2015, she founded the Concept and Interpretation course at the FA CTU, where she works as a researcher and teacher.
