Urban Economics Course

Why are cities dense in their centres and less in the outskirts? Why do people move to suburban areas and make themselves dependent on commuting? Why are some cities smaller and some larger? Why are some industries more likely to be found in large cities, whereas others are in small ones? What are the economic impacts of the planning policies? If you are curious about these questions, this intensive six-day course might be right for you!

Department of Spatial Planning, Faculty of Architecture, CTU in Prague, opens the course for students and professionals from various fields: urban planning, urban studies, geography, economics or public administration, as well as for students in different stages of their studies from bachelor to doctoral level.

In the course, we will not only teach theory but also its practical application. With a scope of 20 hours of teaching divided into two three-day blocks, we will provide lectures, practical seminars, discussions, and two informal evening meetings. We will also have a hands-on session, giving you the opportunity to work with actual urban data and analyze it. The lectures will be complemented by practical exercises using the open-source statistical software R, ensuring you can apply what you learn directly to your work. Moreover, each student will have 30 minutes of individual office hours to discuss in more detail topics of their interest, making you feel supported and valued in your learning journey.
