Kolín - city to the river, river to the city

River is a remarkable natural element for both open countryside and the city. It is the place, where the city can breathe and it is a fundamental urban axis and a significant citywide feature. Elbe in Kolin used to be a source of life and the meeting place for people. The water level was accessible, the buildings were standing right by the river and the mills used to be a majestic gates to the city. Unfortunately this state changed due to the technical progress. Natural character completely disappeared and the river has become merely utilitarian transport corridor and even that potential is used minimally in recent years. Elbe in Kolin lost its original charm. All mentioned above brought me to the topic of this diploma thesis. Most locals don’t consider the space at the river as an essential one. On the contrary I can see a great potential in Elbe. The aim of this proposal is to create a pleasant place for recreation, closer  the river and restore exceptional position of the mills. I want to open a debate on this area in Kolin and start the activity to recover a dignified position of the river.
