Students analyzed different approaches to one building

The Czech subject of architecture history and theory VI / contemporary architectural creation is focused on Czech and foreign architectural creation of the 20th and 21st centuries. In the winter semester 2020/2021, its theme was Original and Embedded. As part of the assignment, students were to observe the confrontation of different approaches to one structure and their symbiosis with each other. The result was a critical analysis of various structures from different parts of Europe. The students were involved with, for example, the military memorial in Bastogne, Belgium, the transformation of a brutalized church in Berlin, the second life of a neological synagogue in Žilina, or a forgotten transformer station in Smíchov, Prague.

"Despite the difficulties of distance learning, the students were able to bring immensely stimulating and, above all, healthily critical probes into the contemporary architecture they confronted with the past. And the art of criticism is not simple," explains their teacher Miroslav Pavel from the Department of Theory and History of Architecture of the FA CTU, and recommends all those interested in contemporary architectural creation to read the best student work this semester found on the subject's website.
