Chess made from climbing ropes

BcA. Tadeáš Rulík

Annotation

The assignment was processed in cooperation with the emerging climbing center, which has a number of old climbing ropes unsuitable for further climbing. These ropes can still be used in other ways and our task was to design their alternative use, ie to come up with a non-traditional, interesting and innovative concept of working with the rope. My work is inspired by the similarities between chess and climbing in search of many possible paths. For the production of the chessboard, I used a simple braiding, which ensures a firm connection of the ropes to each other without the use of other materials. The figures are formed by melting the ends of the ropes, that creates an elegant shiny and smooth surface at the end of the rope, which I used as a unifying element of the figures.
