SENSE OF DIRECTION I DIAMETER DIRECTION

Vendula Stehlíková

Annotation

The idea behind the whole design project was an initiative to find an image of the Prague diameter. This concept is based on the Roman military casters, which were based on two axes. The main north-south axis was called Cardo, which in the case of Prague could be understood as the axis of the river Vltava. The axis perpendicular to it was called Decumanus, and it is this axis that we are focusing on in our design. Historically, Prague was not built on the principle of Cardo and Decumanus, but through its history and by naturally following the morphology of the terrain and the curve of the river, we can trace its footprint in the city. In our proposal we focus on the part of the river between Hradčany and Bubny.
