Center of Charles University in Old Town Square

Matěj Bělohlávek

Annotation

The former focus of old Prague is today one of the less sought-after places in Prague, which over time has become more of a memorial than a living place that used to be. My goal was to return the Square to the inhabitants of the Prague as much as possible and to create another dominant of the city skyline. The base is concrete pedestal, that encloses the town hall block in the square in the most natural manner possible. On the pedestal stand three volumes, three functions, of rough finished stone, the most dominant of which is the student house in the middle, the aula magna building south of it and the rector’s office building to the north. These buildings should serve as a centralizing point for students, teachers, administration and management of Charles University.
