FESTUNGKIRCHE — the Cemetery on the Bastion

Bc. Jan Koupil

Annotation

Bastions - the solid brick belt of the city. It was meant to defend the city, but it mainly prevented urban development. The spurs of the Baroque fortifications in Jelení Street are abandoned and under the domination of wild vegetation. I enter St. Benedict's Bastion to design a Cemetery - with the Chapel of St. Benedict's coffin graves, a columbarium and an burrial meadow. The whole design, the plan delineation of the spaces and the proportions are based on a square module of 8.5 m x 8.5 m derived from the dimensions of the Bastion. This module determines the plan layout and proportions of the buildings. I fill the cells with graves, columbarium, burrial places and give rise to cosy nooks. I try to create a place for the peaceful resting place of the bereaved and the dead.
