A house with a studio for a sculptor

Václav Soukup

Annotation

Intended for Otto Guttfreund, a highly acclaimed cubist sculptor, the house with a detached studio is set on a steep slope in Prague-Hodkovičky district. Characterized by their dynamics, Gutfreund‘s works often seem chaotic and fragmented. This fragmentation is the concept of the house. The volume of the building is distorted by sharp edges and corners. The design offers maximum open space, yet maintains privacy. Reminiscent of randomly scattered shards, the complex comprises a two-floor detached studio and a three-floor residential dwelling. The relatively enclosed studio stands in contrast with the glass-enclosed private section. Illuminating all three floors of the residential section, the large-frame windows facing south are the facets that resemble glass shards.
