The second speaker in this year's November Talks series is Summer Islam, an architect and director of Material Cultures, an architecture and research firm that merges design with materials research. Her work delves into the political ecology of building materials and examines the environmental impacts of using regenerative materials. She has lectured at ETH Zurich and previously taught architecture at Central St Martins, UAL, London Metropolitan University, and the Bartlett School of Architecture at UCL. Currently, she is pursuing a PhD at the RIOT lab at EPFL in Lausanne, where her research focuses on decarbonized built environments that prioritize ecosystems over industrial interests.

Maarten Gielen is a designer and researcher who has long been dedicated to transforming how materials are used in architecture and construction. He co-founded Rotor in 2006 and its sister office Rotor DC (Deconstruction) in 2014. Currently, he works with the design studio Halfwerk. In recognition of his contributions as an author, designer, and project manager, Maarten received the prestigious Maaskant Award for Young Architects, one of the highest honors of its kind in the Benelux. He lectures widely at architecture and design schools across Europe, Asia, and the United States.
Roadside Picnic
Taking cue from Arkady and Boris Strugatsky’s classic novel, Maarten attempts to make sense of a series of estranged material conditions encountered during salvage operations.
"A roadside picnic, just like that. The aliens come, they stop, and then they leave. They leave behind a mess. Except here it's not just garbage—it's dangerous, it's incomprehensible. It's like a picnic to them, but to us... it's a zone of death, a place where reality is broken."
