city/landscape/region & railway| PRAGUE - KLADNO

SS 2024

Assignment

Development of towns, countryside and region around the planned railway from Prague to Kladno.
Praha-Liboc <> Praha-Ruzyně <> Hostivice <> Jeneč <> Unhošť <> Kladno

The railway connection between Prague and Kladno (big suburban city 15 km west of Prague, 68 000 inh.) is used more every year, more and more people from Kladno or Hostivice commute to Prague every day by train. The gradually ongoing complete modernization of the railway, acceleration of journey times and higher frequency of trains will mean a literal revolution for all municipalities on the railway. Traveling by train will completely change their image and fundamentally increase their attractiveness not only for housing, but also for workplaces in services or administration, for business, accommodation, leisure activities or recreation.

The modernization of the line will force a complete redefinition of the existing peripheries of the municipalities and cities on the railway and the relationship between railway stations and residential centers. Stations will become new gateways to cities, and it will be necessary not only to fundamentally cultivate the wider surroundings of railway stations, but also to solve dignified and representative connections to the surrounding districts. The task for the students will be to find a vision for the future development of municipalities and cities on the high-speed railway from Prague to Kladno, with an emphasis on the design of urban development around the railway stations and the design of revitalization of the subsequent system of public spaces, including links to the surrounding suburban landscape.

In cooperation with the landscape architecture students of Ateliér Salzmann // Bečvářová // Pozdech, the task will also be to find and design a new face of the landscape between Prague and Kladno, one of the most exposed and at the same time neglected landscapes in the hinterland of Prague.

Based on the joint mapping and analysis of the current state of the area between Prague and Kladno and the formulation of a common vision and basic concept of structuring and organization of the entire area, each student (or pair of students) will choose a part of the area (around one railway station, one district, part of the landscape, etc. ), which he elaborates in detail. The individual partial proposals will finally be combined into one whole and the result will be an extensive linear urban-landscape plan, which will propose a comprehensive vision of the future of the outskirts of Prague and the cities, the landscape and the entire region along the planned high-speed railway between Prague and Kladno.

---------------------------------
Praha - Liboc, Praha - Ruzyně:
Urban design of a new urban district on the outskirts of Prague. In place of the former barracks and logistics areas will be proposed a new urban plan. New use for the Ruzyně prison. The solution to the transition of Prague to the free landscape around the Prague motorway ring road and the Prague airport.

Hostivice: A proposal to connect the railway station and the historic core of the city. Urban design for a new development around the railway station. Crossing a railway line barrier. The future of giant logistics campuses and their integration into the structure and life of the city. Connecting the city to the suburban recreational landscape around the Prague airport.

Jeneč: Urban design for the integration of the village and the railway station. Urban design for a new development around the railway station. The future of giant logistics areas and their integration into the structure and life of the municipality. Connection of the municipality with the suburban recreational landscape around the Prague airport and with the municipality of Dobrovíz.

Unhošť: A new railway station on the northern edge of the city = a whole new impetus for the development of the city. Redefining the relationship between the edge of the city and its historic center. Design of a new station grade. Urban planning proposal for the complete revitalization of the central part of the city.

Kladno: High-speed railway connection with Prague = new life for Kladno. Comprehensive urban design for the vicinity of the future high-speed railway across the entire city - development around the industrial zone in Pletený Újezd, around the main railway station with links to the largest housing estate Kročehlavy, around the hospital with links to the unique housing estate Rozdělov and in Ostrovec in the Podprůhon area. The solution to the connections of all railway stations in the city to the city center.

city & railway | BENEŠOV

SS 2024

Assignment

Vision and concept for the development of the city on the railway, in the picturesque countryside in the immediate hinterland Prague metropolitan region.
In cooperation with the city architect of the city of Benešov and with the representatives of the city management.

Benešov is a district town (16 000 inh.) located southeast of Prague on the outer edge of the Prague metropolitan region, on the border of the picturesque landscape of the so-called Czech Siberia. It is an example of a typical Czech city. In modern history, Benešov was mainly a military town, it was the headquarters of an army infantry regiment, and during World War II it was partially displaced, as well as the entire region of western Benešov, and served as a military training ground for the Nazi army. Today, the army is no longer based in the city. Thanks to the high-quality railway connection with Prague, today Benešov is mainly a residential town, residents often go to Prague for work.

The city is looking for a new vision for its future development. The task for the students will be to find this vision and, based on it, also propose an overall concept for the development of the municipality's area, and then check this for urban planning solutions for the revitalization or development of selected parts of the city.

Based on the joint mapping and analysis of the current state of the area of the city of Benešov and the formulation of a common vision and basic concept of the development of the city, each student (or pair of students) will choose a part of the city intended for development or comprehensive revitalization (e.g. around the railway station, neglected former military and warehouse areas, city center, etc.), which he elaborates into a detailed urban plan. At the end, the individual partial proposals will be combined into a single whole, and the result will be an overall urban and landscape plan for the future development of the city of Benešov.
