Studio Focused on Urbanism in Urban Environments with Emphasis on Urban Detail
This studio specializes in urbanism within urban environments, with a strong emphasis on urban detail. The studio assignments are rooted in real-world practice and balance between urbanism and building complexes, focusing on the development of contemporary cities at various scales—from public spaces to entire districts. The assignments highlight themes such as mitigating the impacts of climate change in predominantly traditionally structured urban environments, sustainably optimizing urban development, hierarchically composing urban structures, protecting open landscapes, and strengthening blue-green infrastructure systems. A central theme is the search for internal spatial reserves within settlements, brownfields, and the exploration of appropriate forms for residential districts in the near future. The primary goal of the studio is to create pleasant, sustainable, and intelligently composed cities for the 21st century.
The studio offers assignments in architectural and urban studies (ATSS, ATU, ATV, ATVZ), tools for spatial planning—zoning plans (ATVZ), regulatory plans (ATRN), and implementation projects for public spaces (ATRN).
Studio Approach:
The studio guides students through the entire process of designing an urban project, which differs from architectural assignments primarily in its complexity, a higher level of abstraction, work with a different type of detail, and the involvement of various specialists.
The studio has developed methodological guidelines, which students are introduced to during the semester through short (usually Monday) lectures. A project timeline is also provided to students from the first introductory session.
Project Phases:
Both the analytical and design phases of the project typically occur in smaller teams. The design phase begins with the preparation of a vision and concept for the area, which is presented during a joint workshop in Kruh u Jilemnice. This is followed by the gradual development of the proposal down to the details of public spaces or the design of the buildings themselves. The end of the semester is dedicated to the principles of presentation and collaborative planning of the exhibition concept, which we strive to create uniquely each semester.
External Consultants:
The studio regularly invites external consultants and guests. For the transportation sector, we collaborate with Ing. Miroslav Kalina, and for civic building assignments, we invite Ing. arch. Ondřej Laciga (SOA Architects).
