The work aims to describe the phenomenon of shrinking cities within the Ostrava agglomeration mainly from a spatial point of view, to analyze the development plans of the affected municipalities in the context of the expected development and to compare these cities to adequate foreign references.

At the time when most Czech and western cities in general tend to demographically stagnate or decline, we need to consider changing our urban approach to these settlements. The aim of the thesis is to chart the phenomenon of shrinking cities in the Czech Republic and determine a suitable methodology for their studying which can be used for subsequent research.

Since the Middle Ages the cities have been builded on plans which they reflected the needs of trade, transportandsecurity. Significant buildings and sites have begun to connect by road, alley, bridge , tunnel. I am choosing a section focusing on the theme: "The rail - the city", as part of my study. I do not want to take in to the consideration that track is a barrier but that is as an integral part of the city and asthemain axis in townurbanization. SGS research are focusing of project analysis and creation that have been established around the railtrafficartery(thoroughfare)-linearurbanizedcities and their ability to transform into a full-fledged space.

Many layers of the city are structured more or less fractally - its physical structure, public spaces, transport and technical infrastructure, distribution of amenities, social structure etc. By measuring the fractal dimension of the urban structure, we gain comparable values to assess the fractal arrangement of the city - an ordered interrelated sequence of scales of the built structure and open space. The result is an indicator of the amount of complexity of a particular structure. Higher level of fractal arrangement enables ideal distribution of energy, stable and adaptable framework for a quality environment, especially when derived from the human scale. Measurement will be performed for the whole cities and for parts of the cities with predominant urban typology, based on their flat visual representation - schwarzplann. The method will be BCM (Box-Counting Method). We may observe, based on the maps of representatives of Czech cities, different development of fractality with different amount of influence of specific urban forms - house perimeter block, partial block and open urban forms.

Search for alternative concepts to currently prevailing forms of individual housing, where needs of inhabitants, respect to environment and local prosperity will be in balance. Our research concentrates on studying of little used but potencially typological types of housing, exploitation of local building materials connected with support of local economics. We will survey public attitudes to presented new forms of housing in an opinion poll. Final outcome of our research will be brochure oriented on local administrations and wider public, that should extend information about individual housing possibilities.

What is the role of a present form of city perimeter block in the complex system of the city? Current urban masterplans often include the compact city block forms, yet their realization is governed by different rules with different levels of impact and reflection of existing urban structure of the city. The research will focus on particular case studies of recently built projects of perimeter blocks in several european cities and what environment on the basis of current approaches and rules they are creating. Work will reflect both the current knowledge on the evolution of the traditional house block, and from the other side of the current knowledge of the properties of complex systems.

The theme is based on the assumption of current absence of "ideal" plan as a tool leading to the formulation of vision of future shape of the city. This project is focused on reflection of past and contemporary trends in layer of urban ideas and concepts in czech surrounding. We use dialogues as a main tool . These will cover perion from second half of 20th century till nowadays. The project wants to capture misssing information from the thesis point of view. Dialogues have oportunity to make this happened.
