The project aims, as in the successful previous year, on the basis of the realization of architectural elements or small buildings (assumption - tower) from innovative materials to verify the contribution of the "learning by doing" method in the education process of future architects. The complex design of the building begins with individual elements and is a synthesis creative thinking, knowledge of materials, physical phenomena and physical workability and feasibility of the proposal. Individual proposals would be implemented in multi-member student teams under the methodical leadership of the members of the research team team.

The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon is an award-winning program that challenges 20 collegiate teams to design, build, and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient, and attractive. The winner of the competition is the team that best blends affordability, consumer appeal, and design excellence with optimal energy production and maximum efficiency. The main goal of the project is applying for the Solar Decathlon 2013. The long term goal is to obtain the participation in the Solar Decathlon 2013. This is a two-year project starting in spring 2012 and ending in winter 2013. Another objective is design a preliminary study of the solar house. Existing theoretical and practical experience of the members of the team and the previous research work at the Department of Design II will be utilised in this project.

A combined application of methods such as research of design, design research and case studies on the Ecovillages topic are the key stones of the project. A design of a housing complex in specific setting will be the essence of a close cooperation between the DS students and their educators. Various degrees of sustainability in dependence on the programme of the project, selection of building types, material variations will be tested and the impact of these solutions on the architectonic expression of the building. Throughout the project the research by design method will be tested in a small team, such a conscious attempt being the first in the Czech Republic. Expertise of our academics (design and realization of sustainable buildings and their teaching experience) will be employed throughout the project in combination with background research facts, gained in case studies, and theoretic knowledge of each DS student (Dissertation thesis topics: Sustainable development tendencies in ar
