THE LAYERED HOUSE// When a completely new city quarter is being born, layeredness is one of the keys for the city to not only become a cluster of concrete and metal, but rather a living organism. In a newborn city quarter called Aspern I am layering Zwiebelhaus: a house that is layered on many levels. In terms of matter: the circular walls are layered around the central tube and intersected by radial load-bearing walls. In terms of function: the intimacy of space is layered from kindergarten in the heart of the house to elderly home in its torso to cafe, coworking office and rental apartments in its fingertips. These spaces are designed in a way that should also provide social layering. Layering of different floor plans gives rise to many small places, gaps and opportunities.
