LOST HIGHWAY

Ksenia Gorbunova

Annotation

The design of the pavilion attempts to interpret the film Lost Highway on two levels: compositional and psycho-existential. The masses of the building are conceived as movie scenes, and at the same time capture the changes in the protagonist's psychological state. The upward deformation and crumbling of the pavilion's masses expresses the gradual degradation and disintegration of his personality. The placement of the staircase and the elevator on opposite sides of the building allows for a looped movement, which is supposed to imitate time-loop plot of the film. The darkened interior of the pavilion serves to create a feeling of uncertainty, unease and emphasizes the ever-increasing desire to escape from reality.
