Assignment

Karlovy Vary is the most famous spa town in Czechia, also known for the international film festival. Despite the picturesque natural slopes surrounding this town, residents have been disappearing from the center for the past few decades, and life is fading away from the city. The theme for the summer semester is the densification of the spa center and transforming empty plots into vibrant spaces.

We are going to focus on gaps of various shapes and sizes in the streets Ondřejská, I. P. Pavlova, and Pod jelením skokem. The project aims to add buildings offering supportive social services, enabling residents to stay within the everyday community or encouraging those who left the center to return.

In the studio, we emphasize the social context, reflecting the needs of residents and the city as a whole. We will help you in finding socially innovative approaches to design and new forms of buildings for daily social services, as well as structures that can integrate well into the historical context of the city center.

Your projects are going to be exhibited and presented to the public in Karlovy Vary with the mission to stimulate public debate on aspects of a dignified life in the city center and the preservation or return of its residents to the historic centre.
