living bridge

SS 2025

let´s re-use existing structures.

let´s transform mobility.

let´s create a sustainable world.

the bridge as a theme

in prague you can see that great bridges have a positive influence on the identity of a city. unfortunately, vienna's bridges are rather ugly. so what could be more obvious than bringing students from prague to vienna to design a wonderful bridge?

the task in vienna

it's about the bridge brigittenauer brücke in vienna. a particularly boring bridge. this bridge was the core element of a freeway ring road that was supposed to run through the middle of the city and over the danube. fortunately, this stupid idea was never realized. the bridge may not have a beautiful construction, but viewed from above, with its spectacular, octopus-like ramps, it's actually not unattractive.

the bridge becomes a village

the task is to transform the traffic structure into an elongated village. on a width of more than 30 m, you can build a lot: on the right and left, or in the middle or as a bridge over a central roadway. these are lightweight structures that are placed parasitically on the bridge, in special cases possibly hanging on the side, possibly in some places down to the water or perhaps under the supporting structure.

the program is diverse, it should be hybrid. there is only bus and bicycle traffic as well as delivery traffic. we plan how to live and work. there can be leisure and educational facilities, art and cultural objects, local services or gastronomy. everything is possible.

the groups up to 4 students

the bridge is divided into segments. each group of students will work on their own segment.

the studio with 4 opinions

the studio has three professors, gerd, peter and jakob, as well as the assistant michal. we will often give similar, but sometimes also very different opinions on the respective design status. the most important didactic goal is for the students to become aware of their own attitude and to pursue it very purposefully.

the corrections as a challenge

the studios will partly take place via video correction. there will also be intensive days and so-called “sprint weeks” where we want to deepen a certain aspect.

the submission as the highlight

for the final submission, a video will be produced, which will be edited together from individual films of the groups. the film should show a path over the bridge, sometimes panning to buildings or even into them. in addition to the informative aspect, an entertainment aspect is very important. architecture must be fun. we should smile and laugh.

all groups build a large model together. only waste products are to be used as model building materials. there is plenty of used material on this planet that is perfect for model building. the more colorful and lively, the better.
