Annotation
Two-years researcher project aims at investigating to what extent and how FEATURES AND IDEAS, DERIVED FROM ENGLISH LANDSCAPE, were received and appropriated in the possessions of Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo, Ferdinand III of Habsburg-Lorraine between 1763 and 1849. Starting from [an exploration of] the diversity in the perception, development and application of schemes/designs and elements connected to this landscape culture, I intend to provide an accurate description of the cultural contexts of the Grand Duke's territories in TUSCANY AND BOHEMIA where different intervention and initiatives took place in order to "construct the landscape/greenery" according to the English fashion. The formation of these geographical contexts, as they developed within these general cultural coordinates, was nonetheless influenced by exogenous factors, such as historical circumstances/events, different needs of the clients, the different training of gardeners/artists/architects, and the diffusion of gardening textbooks, as well as different botanical conditions, etc. These circumstances induced the clients and their architects and gardeners to re- elaborate, often autonomously, the founding concepts of the English Garden in order to adapt to the different [local] realities of their estates and residences. The answers to these questions will allow for a [better] contextualization and appreciation of this author's projects, by positioning them [more precisely] in the art history of European gardens. At the same time, we will obtain a "working tool", which will greatly contribute to the correct conservation of the cultural and natural heritage studied in this project. This project will finally enable both the valorization of historical gardens and the reconstruction of the network of dense and varied cultural relationships and exchanges that existed between Italy, Bohemia, and the rest of Europe in this disciplinary field. Annotation
The project aims at a new reading of the work of Benedikt Ried, the foremost architect of Central European Early Renaissance who, at the same time, stood firmly in the tradition of Late Gothic architecture. Rieis work will be scrutinized both with thehel p of scientific methods (new surveying of details and their geometrical analysis, research of building substance of Rieis architectures) and by standard methods of art history as a humanistic discipline. It means that I would realize new research ofarchi ve materials, related to Rieis works as well as of the visual sources, which could serve as an inspiration of Rieis oeuvre. I would also analyze both the possible influence of modern architectural treatises as far as they were accessible in theCzech land s (Vitruvius, Leon Battista Alberti) and the role of traditinal Gothic design methods.
