Civil engineer (Brno University of Technology in Brunn - MSc. in Civil Engineering), structural and architectural engineer (Czech Technical University in Prague - Ph.D. in Architecture and Structural Engineering) and doctor in History (Université Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne - Docteur en histoire) and History of Technology (Czech Technical University in Prague - Ph.D. in History of Technology), Dr. Martin Pospisil is professor at the Department of Load-Bearing Structures at the Faculty of Architecture of the Czech Technical University in Prague. He started his professional career in 1981 as a stonecutter, repairing buildings on heritage register. After his university studies, he worked 12 years as an architectural and structural engineer and an additional 12 years as a state supervisor of building constructions (supervising mainly renovations of heritage preserved buildings, incl. national cultural monuments). He is an authorised civil engineer (Czech Chamber of Chartered Engineers and Technicians, since 1996), and forensic expert in building structures on the historic register (since 2010). He was involved in preparing and negotiating proposals for two international entries on the UNESCO World Heritage List (European historic spa towns and Mountain sites of the Czech-German Ore Mountains). He is a member of the Construction History Society (Department of Architecture, Cambridge University, UK), and a member of the Société française d'histoire des sciences et des techniques (Université Paris, France). His research focuses mainly on historical structures and technologies and on new ways of teaching structural mechanics to architects based on explanation and practice of historical technologies.
