Florenc 21: West

SS 2025

Florenc is a transformation area located in the centre of Prague on the border of Nové Město and Karlín, i.e. on the border of Prague 1 and 8, below the slope of Vítkov Hill. The area of the abolished fortification on which the area is located was used in this part of Prague as early as the mid-19th century for the construction of a freight railway infrastructure. Therefore, it has remained undeveloped until today.

The development of the Florenc21 transformation area is divided into two stages - West and East. The dividing line is the new street (as defined in the winning design of the Florenc21 urban design competition and in the subsequent studies), which crosses the Florenc area to the south-east from the Museum of the Capital City of Prague to the passage under the Negrelli Viaduct and further towards Žižkov.

In four ongoing concurrent architectural competitions, the optimal architectural solution for the West Stage of the Florenc21 transformation area development will be sought. The subject of the competition Florenc21: Stage West is the architectural design of blocks B01, B02, B03 and B04.

In the summer semester, we will be looking at the form and infill of the blocks that emerge from the 2021 competition. A complicated place where the arterial divides the city, where we lack human scale, walkability and friendliness, where historically the city ended and now traffic rules, we will seek to design buildings that connect residential neighborhoods. An interesting task will be to integrate the arterial road into the urban area. Finally, the ongoing international competition will be a good reflection on the students' proposals.
We foresee the following functional content for the site: office, hotel, senior housing, retail, apartments, parking and more. The detailed layout of functions will be subject to initial research.
