Reinforced concrete - the phenomenon of the 20th century - has an indelible and unique impression in sacral architecture. In the 20th and 21st century has been built all over the world many remarkable sacral buildings that could have been built thanks to reinforced concrete and its extraordinary characteristics. In the area of the Czech lands had this material its significant role, unfortunately not in the same degree as abroad and in some surrounding countries. The aim of this project is to set the Czech reinforced concrete sacral architecture of the Roman Catholic Church to the Middle European context and make a comparison with churches and chapels that were built in 20th and 21st century in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Poland, Slovak Republic, Hungary and Slovenian. On the grounds of the historical turn of events in Roman Catholic Church and the development of reinforced concrete structures in each country will be prepared a study for a comparison of the sacral architecture in Czech lands and the other Middle European countries. Finding the dissimilarities and unifying elements between the Middle European sacral architecture is the main goal of this project. As an important study material (indispensable for the following comparison) will serve solvers research material and her results from the finished project SGS 2015 "Forms of Catholic Churches Made of Reinforced Concrete in the Czech Republic"

The first notable implementation of reinforced concrete into sacral architecture in the Czech Republic can be observed in 1920s, where the reinforced concrete comes to the fore through the functionalistic architecture. However the early application of reinforced concrete was at the beginning of the 20th century, where this material was used for the stressed parts of the structures, especially for the foundations and vaults. The aim of this project is to follow the results of the student grant project SGS 2015 " Forms of Catholic Churches Made of Reinforced Concrete in the Czech Republic" and prepare the complete catalogue of the reinforced concrete sacral architecture of all Churches and Religions taking places in the Czech Republic from the early attempts at the beginning of the 20th century until today. Finally, the space analyse of the buildings and appraisal of the efficiency of the designed structure will be done.

The project is a double-degree project contracted between the Czech Technical University in Prague and the Université Paris 1 Panthéon - Sorbonne. The project of graphic statics is studying hitherto little explored part of Czech technical history, in which the Czech lands were developmentally comparable, if not in advance, with other technologically advanced countries in Europe and North America. Attention is focused mainly on personalities of the Czech part of the Prague Polytechnic, namely Professor Vilém Bukovský and Professor Josef Solin. Currently, this project has a very interesting and topical overlap, it is intended as a basis for a new approach to teaching structural mechanics to students of architecture and design at the Faculty of Architecture, CTU in Prague. This concept is inspired by technical education of architects at the School of Architecture at MIT - Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston/Cambridge, USA, and ETH - Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich, Switzerland, where visually perceived graphic statics is advantageously applied as a very illustrative teaching method of structural mechanics to non-technically oriented students.

The twentieth century was the era of reinforced concrete structures, structures of great spans, varied shapes and forms. Widespread use of concrete has led to the application of reinforced concrete structures in sacral buildings since the 1920s. However the commencements are visible since the beginning of the 20th century (church St. Jean du Montmartre in Paris (1894-1904) by Anatole de Baudot; church Der Heilige Geist in Vienna (1909-1911) by Josip Plecnik and the iconic church Notre Dame in Le Raincy (1922-1923) by the brothers Perret). The application of this new material began at the beginning of the 20th century. It was used for the stressed elements of the structure, predominantly for the foundations and vaults. Since the end of the 1920s reinforced concrete structures gain their irreplaceable position in the sacral architecture. The first attempts are connected with the functionalistic architecture. The aim of this project is firstly to make a complete list of the reinforced concrete Catholic churches in the Czech Republic from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day. Secondly, analyse the space forms and the structure efficiency of the churches and finally, divide these objects to the groups according to their shapes and forms, architectural styles and the period, when they were built.
